- EXPLOSIVE DETECTION -

Most of our dogs are trained for explosives detection. The world wide demand for this type of working dogs is very high. Our dogs are widely used at airports by customs, the protection and security of military bases and government buildings. Our dogs are even working for the security of high government officials and the presidential security.

Four Winds can provide different types of explosive detection dogs:
• Standard Explosives Dog
• Combat Explosives IED dog

All dogs receive the same basic training and are stabile, strong but sociable working dogs. All our dogs are free around gunfire and they are able to work in busy and noisy environments and areas.

The training consists of basic odor recognition of all explosive substances. Explosives dogs are taught to give a passive response when the dog is in odor recognition. This means that the dog will sit or lie down at the scent. We also teach the dog not to touch anything in the search area and also the dog is not allowed to bark during his work.

We teach the dogs a special search pattern so that the dogs are able to search everything completely without skipping anything. Everything is taught using the natural drive for a pvc pipe and natural search drive and instinct. We start the training at our training centre but quickly progresses to various training locations outside of our training centre. This all for the experience and confidence of the dogs before they start working in reality.

The explosive detection dogs are trained to search the following;
• Several buildings and industrial buildings
• Several vehicles, trucks, busses, airplanes etc.
• Luggage and packages
• Along roads, dirt roads and motorways
• Open fields and plains

Standard explosive detection dogs work mainly on the leash with the dog handler but they are also trained to search a building or vehicle from a short distance of the handler.

The training of a standard explosive detection dog takes about 16 to 20 weeks.

The Combat IED dogs are special dogs that are trained under severe noise conditions. These dogs are mainly used in war and terror threats and in convoy transportation. The presidential security makes extensive use of this type dogs. The combat IED dogs are trained to search at long distance (up to 100 meters or more) from the handler. They are taught a special search pattern and to follow up commands at a great distance. The dog responds to voice commands and hand signals given by the dog handler. In practice, the dogs will be deployed to detect IED’s along roads and open areas. Especially the distance is very important for the safety of the handlers and further people.

This requires a special training, but the dog must have exceptional qualities also. These qualities are not to teach or train the dog but occur naturally. The roadside bomb explosives dogs naturally have a distinctive character. The search drive must be extremely high and the dog should naturally like to listen well. On the other hand, the dog must be extremely confident and independent to do this work properly. To find this type of dog is certainly not easy.

The training of a Combat explosives IED dog takes about 20 to 30 weeks
